A: I am sure that most of the replies you will get will tell you to use more adjectives and adverbs. This is good advise, but I would also say to look very carefully at the verbs you use. Try this exercise...write your story the way you want, then when you re-write...and all serious writers re-write...when you re-write see if you can get rid of all of the following words---IS, ARE,DO, DOES, DID, WAS, WERE, BE, BEING, BEEN, HAD, HAVE, HAS.
In all honestly my beginning writers HATE this assignment. We use these words as crutuches all our lives. But instead of writing "The man is sitting in the chair." ask yourself the question "How"--- The man slumps heavily in the old chair, his eyes fixed on the door, and his foot methodically tapping out the passing.
